Sulfur Dioxide (SO₂)

Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) is a colorless gas with a suffocating odor, primarily produced by the combustion of fossil fuels (coal and oil) and the smelting of sulfur-containing ores. It is also emitted by domestic heating systems and motor vehicles.

Soluble in water, SO₂ forms sulfuric acid upon contact with moisture, making it particularly irritating to the respiratory system and eyes. Prolonged exposure to high levels of sulfur dioxide can lead to respiratory illnesses.

To mitigate risks associated with sulfur dioxide in indoor air, using an air purifier is recommended.
