Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2)

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a toxic reddish-brown gas and one of the major pollutants in the Earth's atmosphere. It is formed from nitrogen monoxide (NO), primarily during the combustion of fossil fuels, such as in automobile engines and power plants.

The main sources of NO2 emissions include:

  • Combustion: Industry and energy production.
  • Heating: Residential and commercial heating systems.
  • Transport: Engines of light and heavy vehicles.

In the air, NO2 can cause serious health issues. It leads to significant inflammation of the airways at concentrations exceeding 200 μg/m3 over short periods. Additionally, it is the primary agent responsible for the formation of nitrate aerosols, contributing to air pollution.

Epidemiological studies show that prolonged exposure to NO2 increases bronchial symptoms in asthmatic children and decreases lung function in cities across Europe and North America.

To mitigate the risks associated with nitrogen dioxide, we recommend using an air purifier.
