VOC

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are volatile molecules containing at least one carbon atom, characterized by their ability to float in the air and easily disperse into the atmosphere.

These compounds can originate from natural sources or human activities and are found in many common products, such as:

  • paints,
  • inks,
  • glues,
  • stain removers,
  • cosmetics,
  • solvents, etc.

Health Effects

VOCs negatively affect health and can cause various symptoms, including:

  • coughing,
  • chest discomfort,
  • shortness of breath,
  • nasal irritation,
  • eye irritation,
  • sore throat, etc.

Some compounds, such as benzene, are classified as carcinogenic. VOCs alter the chemical composition of the air, making them extremely polluting to our environment.

It is possible to measure VOCs in homes or offices, particularly with the help of Airthings sensors

Air purifiers can help address VOC issues: discover our range of air purifiers.

In homes, VOCs contribute to stale air. Therefore, it is essential to ventilate daily, especially when making interior changes like installing new furniture or painting, as glues can emit VOCs for several months.
