Sick Building Syndrome (SBS): Causes and Solutions

The Sick Building Syndrome (SBS), also known as Syndrome du Bâtiment Malsain (SBM), emerged in the 1970s. It is characterized by the occurrence of various symptoms, such as headaches, a blocked nose, or a dry throat, experienced by multiple people within the same building after a short or prolonged stay.

The Sick Building Syndrome is diagnosed when 20% of the building's occupants experience these symptoms twice a week or more.

Several factors may contribute to SBS, including:

  • Poor air ventilation,
  • Inadequate temperature,
  • Too low or high humidity levels,
  • Electromagnetic fields,
  • Poor lighting.

One-third of newly built or renovated buildings may be affected by Sick Building Syndrome. To improve air quality and reduce the associated risks, the use of appropriate solutions is essential.
